About the role
This position is accountable for instructing middle and/or alternate student athletes in soccer, helping each participant achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.
Administrative direction is provided by the Director of Sports, Principal, or other assigned administrator.
Responsibilities
- Assist in improving the soccer program, scheduling non-league games and officials, and purchasing equipment and supplies.
- Assist players in the care and prevention of injuries; prepare outside facilities for all practice sessions.
- Attend required clinics, camps, seminars, coaches meetings, and rules interpretation meetings.
- Coach an assigned middle school soccer team.
- Collect all uniforms and equipment at the end of the season.
- Communicate with classroom teachers to support individual success of each player and with the head coach regarding strategies and procedures.
- Comply with Board policies and District procedures in developing and maintaining the interscholastic athletics program.
- Conduct oneself with tact and diplomacy; develop and enforce training rules.
- Enforce eligibility requirements; ensure appropriate dress at practices and events.
- Ensure practice and repetition of fundamentals, proper care of equipment, and safety of students.
- Ensure timely completion of all tasks and proper conduct of team players at all times.
- Evaluate players; follow all applicable State laws and CIAC regulations.
- Instruct and supervise team managers in game and practice preparation.
- Interact positively with staff, students, and parents; attend district-sponsored sporting events.
- Maintain confidentiality of student athlete information (e.g., grades for eligibility).
- Maintain respect for and support of the middle school athletic program; ensure satisfactory attendance.
- Oversee the condition of the locker room; participate in awards programs and distribute awards.
- Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.
- Provide a positive learning environment for athletes; report information to the Director in a timely manner.
- Report all injuries to the school nurse and/or principal; respond to routine questions appropriately.
- Manage issuance, care, and inventory of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
- Schedule fundraising activities, practice sessions, and scrimmages as approved by the Principal.
- Serve as a role model for students; verify players have submitted physical forms and necessary paperwork to the school nurse.
Requirements
- Certificate of Completion for Module 15 from the Connecticut Coaching Education Program.
- Connecticut State Department of Education Coach permit or Temporary Coach permit.
- Current CPR and First Aid Certificates.
- Life Guard Certification (for swimming only).
- High School diploma or GED.
- Successful completion of pre-employment process.
- Current Motor Vehicle operator's license (may be required).
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of coaching techniques, human behavior, and the specific sport (soccer).
- Knowledge of federal, State, and Board policies regarding student conduct and disciplinary action.
- Basic skills in equipment repair and maintenance as applicable.
- Effective coaching, active listening, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Public speaking and clear communication (oral and written).
- Ability to diffuse volatile situations, establish rapport with students, and perform essential physical functions.
- Ability to recognize and treat minor athletic injuries; work assigned hours and effectively with others.
- Leadership and coaching ability; ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Individuals must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity to perform the duties of the assignment.
- Physical Demands:
- Frequent: Standing, walking, lifting (light to medium work up to 50 lbs.), carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, twisting, and repetitive motion.
- Constant: Depth perception, color distinction, peripheral vision, visual acuity (near and far), hand/eye/foot coordination, talking, hearing, and feeling.
- Environmental Conditions:
- Occasional: Cold (50°F or less), heat (90°F or more), temperature changes, wetness, humidity, exposure to chemicals, gases, fumes, unpleasant odors, bodily fluids, dampness, mechanical hazards, physical danger, or abuse.
- Frequent: Extreme noise or vibration, confinement to small or restricting areas.
Pay
Stipend: $3,473 for the fall season.
Schedule
Fall season (August–November). Coaches are encouraged to attend varsity and other district-sponsored sporting events.
