About the role
Assist in short and long-term planning to support Wellness Center goals and UTTC’s strategic plan. Remain current and adhere to legal requirements that affect students in higher education, such as FERPA, HIPAA, ADA, and all governing guidelines related to the UTTC campus community.
Responsibilities
- Serve on the college’s “High Risk” Crisis Management Team and other selected committees/task groups to provide holistic services to meet individual needs of students and support family systems.
- Provide supportive and therapeutic counseling to students and/or their dependents in areas including academics, personal life, social relationships, responsibilities, and behavioral expectations. Counseling includes parent-child relationships, significant-other relations, family dynamics, daily living skills, and home management.
- Complete evaluations, in concert with other Wellness staff, of students’ physical, psychological, and social strengths and challenges; make community-based referrals as appropriate.
- Counsel students on academic probation and those returning from suspension; assess needs and create short-term plans for immediate improvement.
- Plan and implement group sessions for students and/or family clients using social work theory, knowledge, methods, ethics, and professional use of self.
- Coordinate action and follow-up plans with UTTC campus departments when child abuse, child neglect, and/or spousal abuse are evident; initiate counseling intervention and referrals as needed. Report all abuse as a mandated reporter when children and youth under 18 are impacted.
- Support UTTC policies and procedures related to on-campus housing, student organizations, student activities, safety and security, discipline, and all areas of student concerns.
- Serve and assume leadership roles on assigned academic, student, and Campus Services committees.
- Participate in scheduled meetings with academic advisors and/or faculty regarding student concerns, manage retention system notifications, follow-ups, interventions, and communication.
- Maintain open communication with various departments on a need-to-know basis, including Wellness Center, Academic Affairs, Finance, Student Enrollment and Financial Aid, Housing, Safety and Security, Campus Services, and Administration.
- Maintain contact statistics for monthly reporting to the UTTC Board of Directors and accurate record-keeping for student progress, withdrawals, and data entry into the electronic health records system (Kareo).
- Assist with grant proposals, including prospect research, writing, and grant management when assigned.
- Teach selected content (e.g., suicide prevention, mental health awareness) for First Year Experience classes and other campus classes.
- Attend professional development training and continuing education related to the licensed profession.
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as Campus Cupboard support, disability services/Accuplacer testing, Wellness Center front desk coverage, and emergency on-call response.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related field.
- North Dakota licensure as LBSW; Master’s degree preferred in Social Work or Counseling with licensure as LMSW, LCSW, LAPC, or LPC.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and compatible software.
- Operate basic office equipment: copier, fax machine, digital phone system.
- Previous experience within a post-secondary college setting preferred.
Skills
- Familiarity and practical application of counseling techniques and methods.
- Training and experience in trauma-informed care and practice.
- Experience facilitating counseling support groups and individual counseling/therapies (e.g., CBT, DBT, EMDR, MI).
- Understanding of case management and timely case notes/documentation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
- Ability to relate to diverse ages and groups; sensitivity to Native American culture and disadvantaged students; understanding of tribally appropriate practices.
- Working knowledge of local support services and referral agencies, including disability services.
- Demonstrated ability in support of prevention, mediation, and advocacy of student concerns, including disability services.
- Familiarity with substance abuse issues, family systems, career guidance, and general counseling issues (e.g., self-esteem, social skills, assertiveness, depression, suicide).
Schedule
Normal working hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch. Additional hours may be required as needed. Occasional travel to attend workshops and/or conferences.
Physical Demands

- Must be able to go up and down stairs.
- Must be able to sit for longer periods of time.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
- Ability to perform daily office duties.
