Welder - Level 2

Shift: 2nd shift • Location: Solon, Northeast Ohio, USA

About the role

At this level the operator shall be proficient at their job with only limited help while maintaining performance objectives regarding standard work processes. This includes recognition of routine problems and the ability to keep the process running by making appropriate adjustments to correct the problems.

Responsibilities

• Operate welding equipment within both cellular and non-cellular work environments.
• Learn multiple types of welding and test equipment (Swagelok power supplies, Swagelok standard/micro weld heads, dual/single chuck weld lathes, leak detection equipment, bore scope, VAC Dri-Train, Comparator, buffing wheels, and appropriate inspection gages).
• Read and interpret manufacturing prints.
• Troubleshoot and make appropriate judgment calls based on experience.
• Demonstrate high attention to detail balanced by the ability to meet production demands.
• Make sound, independent decisions to adjust processes when needed.
• Perform safety and housekeeping standards in the work area, including daily and weekly maintenance on equipment.
• Use necessary controls for weld parameter adjustments.
• Accurately adjust torch, gas lines, and fixturing.
• Make accurate speed settings.
• Perform required in-process inspections.
• Use shop geometry and complex gages, including the comparator.
• Identify and change electrodes as needed.
• Change routine tooling.
• Set up and operate equipment with minimal assistance.
• Clean and inspect welding equipment accessories.
• Recognize and comply with all applicable Swagelok procedures.
• Understand QN (Quality Notification) paperwork and procedures.
• Use PVD (Primary Visual Display) and schedule boards.
• Understand standard work and workflows.
• Avoid excessive downtime or requests for help due to overlooked elementary problems.

Requirements

• No formal education required.
• Preferred: Shop floor experience.
• Experience with Nickel-based and other exotic alloys.
• Basic understanding of manufacturing prints and products.
• Basic computer skills.
• Basic shop math – ability to perform simple calculations such as stack-ups.
• Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
• Understanding of gages including calipers, go/no-go, and comparator.
• General knowledge of SAP is preferred.

Working Conditions

• Vision: Must sustain effective visual inspection over an 8-hour shift and pass pre-employment and annual Vision Acuity tests.
• Lifting: May lift up to 25 lbs. frequently.
• Manual Dexterity: Must demonstrate manual dexterity required to properly handle products and gages.
• Sitting/Standing: May be required to sit or stand for 8 hours per day; must be able to move throughout the shop floor to gather samples and parts.
