About the role

The Washington State Department of Agriculture seeks to fill multiple positions for Weights and Measures Compliance Specialists 1 & 2. This role is part of the department's mission to ensure marketplace equity and protect consumers through the enforcement of weights and measures laws.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce state and federal laws to protect consumers and promote marketplace fairness.
  • Inspect retail motor fuel stations for compliance with advertising, product delivery documentation, pricing, and labeling requirements.
  • Test retail motor fuel dispensers for accuracy and compute charges correctly.
  • Collect motor fuel samples for laboratory testing under the State Motor Fuel Quality Act.
  • Inspect and test various scales and packaging for compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Investigate consumer complaints and provide inspection services as requested.
  • Inspect other types of devices as new technologies emerge, such as electric vehicle charging stations and cannabis grow facility scales.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience in inspection, maintenance, repair, installation, and/or design of weighing or measuring equipment or in the enforcement of weights and measures laws.
  • A bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, engineering, chemistry, physics, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate's degree or higher with major coursework in mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering, electronics, criminal justice, business administration, or allied fields.
  • Successful completion of National Conference on Weights and Measures professional exams within one year of employment.
  • A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one year of employment.

  • Pass a background check.
  • Pass a drug screening.

Pay

The monthly salary range for Weights and Measures Compliance Specialist 1 (In-Training) is $43,836 - $56,952 annually, and for Weights and Measures Compliance Specialist 2 is $50,412 - $66,072 annually. Additionally, incumbents assigned to a home duty station in King County receive an additional 5% location pay stipend.

Travel is expected as part of the job, and the schedule may vary based on the specific needs of the position.
