Weights and Measures Specialist 1 or Trainee (NY HELPS)
About the role
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets seeks a Weights and Measures Specialist 1 or Trainee to work in Suffolk County. This position involves supervising municipal weights and measures officials, conducting on-site audits, inspecting and testing various commercial devices, and training municipal officials.
Responsibilities
- Supervise municipal weights and measures officials in the inspection and testing of commercial weighing and measuring devices.
- Plan and conduct comprehensive on-site audits of municipal weights and measures programs.
- Inspect and test classes of commercial devices not typically handled by municipal officials, such as liquefied petroleum gas truck meters, large capacity commercial scales, highway Weigh in Motion direct enforcement sensors, and aircraft refueling meters.
- Obtain petroleum samples at wholesale facilities and investigate and enforce actions against terminals with sample failures.
- Train municipal officials in obtaining retail petroleum samples and assist them in investigation and enforcement actions against retail stations with sample failures.
- Serve as a liaison and technical resource between the Division and municipal weights and measures programs and private industry.
- Assess the training needs of municipal programs to coordinate and provide the necessary training.
Requirements
This position requires a combination of experience and education. Candidates must either have four years of experience enforcing weights and measures laws and regulations, inspecting and testing commercial devices, or conducting chemical or physical analyses, or possess an associate degree with at least 24 semester credit hours in specialized courses related to physical sciences, electronic sciences, or mathematics.
Qualifications
- Associate degree with at least 24 semester credit hours in specialized courses related to physical sciences, electronic sciences, or mathematics can substitute for two years of specialized experience.
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester credit hours in specialized courses related to physical sciences, electronic sciences, or mathematics can substitute for four years of experience.
- Master’s degree with at least 24 semester credit hours in specialized courses related to physical sciences, electronic sciences, or mathematics can substitute for five years of experience.
- Doctorate with at least 24 semester credit hours in specialized courses related to physical sciences, electronic sciences, or mathematics can substitute for six years of experience.
Skills
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in using precision scales and measuring equipment are essential. Proficiency in computer systems and software applications is also required.

Pay
The starting salary for the Weights and Measures Specialist Trainee 1 is $53,764/year, and the hiring salary for the PEF salary grade (SG) 14 is $59,994/year. The Weights and Measures Specialist 1, SG-18 starting salary is $66,951/year. Employees in New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties receive an additional downstate pay adjustment of $4,000/year.
Schedule
The Weights and Measures Specialist 1 or Trainee works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
