About the role

The Agriculture/Weights and Measures Department is currently recruiting to fill multiple Measures and Weights Inspector positions at various levels. If you are interested in being considered at the different levels of this opportunity, you must apply to the separate concurrent recruitments being conducted for each level.

Responsibilities

  • Help protect consumers and businesses by ensuring commercial weighing and measuring devices are accurate and comply with state laws and regulations.
  • Inspect, calibrate, test, and certify a variety of measuring devices.
  • Investigate complaints and educate businesses on regulatory requirements.
  • Document inspection findings and maintain specialized testing equipment.
  • Apply current weights and measures laws and standards to promote fair competition and consumer confidence throughout Sonoma County.

Requirements

  • Detail-oriented professionals who communicate effectively with diverse audiences and enjoy working collaboratively to support fair and accurate marketplace practices.
  • Able to explain technical information and regulatory requirements in a clear, approachable manner while exercising sound judgment, tact, and professionalism during inspections and compliance discussions.
  • Adaptable, eager to learn, and able to interpret and apply laws and regulations with accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Build positive working relationships with colleagues, businesses, and members of the public, handle sensitive information with discretion, and are committed to providing respectful service.

Qualifications

  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college with major course work in one of the following areas of discipline: Agricultural, Biological, Chemical, or Physical Science; Commerce; Engineering; Law Enforcement; Marketing; Mathematics; Physics; or Statistics, or other degrees approved by the California Secretary of Food and Agriculture.
  • Or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college with a minimum of 30 semester units (or equivalent) in one or any combination from the same areas of discipline.

Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of retail point-of-sale systems and commercial business operations.
  • Familiarity with agricultural, ranching, or related industries.
  • Experience working with or around heavy trucks, cranes, or similar commercial equipment.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office and other computer applications to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are desired but not required.
