About the role

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Weights and Measures, is seeking a Weights and Measures Inspector to serve a territory including Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Galax, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Radford, Smythe, and Wythe counties, as well as the cities within.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce the Weights and Measures Law and related regulations.
  • Test, inspect, and determine the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices used commercially in Virginia, including motor fuel dispensers and small capacity weighing devices.
  • Sample motor fuels and conduct point-of-sale inspections.
  • Investigate related consumer complaints.
  • Complete documentation of activities and prepare investigative summaries as needed.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of inspection, investigation, and enforcement procedures related to petroleum, point-of-sale, or scales industries (either sales or service).
  • Ability to report facts accurately and understand, interpret, and apply laws and regulations.
  • Excellent customer service and exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment proficiently and safely, with basic mechanical aptitude and mathematical ability.
  • Effective organizational and planning skills, with the ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with standard office software applications.
  • Physically demanding role; must be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis, bend as needed, distinguish colors, and exhibit manual dexterity.
  • Willingness to work outside in various weather conditions.
  • Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license with a driving record reflecting responsibility for highway safety.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Qualifications

  • A combination of related education, training, and experience indicating possession of the required knowledge and skills is desirable.
  • Knowledge of criminal justice, public administration, or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience in enforcement, inspection, or investigative activities in a regulatory environment such as weights and measures is highly desirable.

Additional Information

  • The selected applicant must reside, or be willing to relocate, within a reasonable distance of the assigned territory.
  • Final candidate must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
  • VDACS does not offer sponsorship for employment; selected candidate must provide acceptable Form I-9 documents.
  • VDACS participates in E-Verify to confirm work authorization in the U.S.
