About the role
The Agriculture and Weights Department is seeking Weights and Measures Inspector II positions. These roles play a crucial role in ensuring commercial weighing and measuring devices, packaged goods, and retail pricing practices comply with California laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Independently inspect, test, approve, and seal commercial weighing and measuring devices.
- Verify product labeling and net contents.
- Investigate consumer complaints.
- Conduct price verification inspections at retail establishments.
- Provide technical guidance to businesses.
- Coordinate with local and state agencies.
- Support public outreach efforts.
- Assist with training and mentoring less experienced inspectors.
- Perform routine inspections and approve devices meeting statutory requirements.
- Consult with senior inspectors or supervisors on complex assignments, potential violations, or regulatory enforcement actions.
Requirements

- Experience performing precise measurements, interpreting technical information, and maintaining accurate inspection records.
- Comfortable working independently in various environments, safely operating specialized equipment, and clearly communicating technical and regulatory requirements.

- Knowledge of mechanical principles, mathematics, statistics, and basic chemistry.
- Experience in retail or commercial settings with an understanding of business operations and consumer transactions.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately document, maintain, and report technical or inspection-related data.
- Understanding of consumer protection principles and the ability to evaluate technical information to support fair, consistent regulatory decisions.
- The ability to read, interpret, and apply applicable laws, regulations, and technical standards.
- The demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technical concepts and procedures while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Proficiency using mobile data systems, inspection software, spreadsheets, and other computer applications.
- Experience operating and maintaining specialized inspection and testing equipment.
Qualifications
- One year of experience in the enforcement of agricultural or weights and measures laws and regulations.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and Class B California driver's license and Tank Vehicle Endorsement.
- Two licenses issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture in agricultural inspection or weights and measures inspection.
Skills
- Knowledge of mechanical principles and the application of mathematics, statistics, and basic chemistry to technical inspection work.
- Experience in retail or commercial settings with an understanding of business operations and consumer transactions.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately document, maintain, and report technical or inspection-related data.
