About the Role
Part-Time Water Maintenance Worker
Responsibilities
- Identify and repair leaks in the water distribution system, ranging from ¾” service lines up to 24” main distribution lines.
- Install taps and make service connections to the water distribution system.
- Install water meters and water meter boxes.
- Maintain and submit flushing and maintenance repair reports.
- Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials used in installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution system components.
- Inspect, clean, and maintain water maintenance department equipment.
- Collect and test water samples for Chlorine content as needed.
- Perform restoration work after repairs, including patching roadways, spreading fill material, seeding, and mulching.
- Adhere to NC811 requirements for underground utility locating and excavation.
- Locate underground utilities (water, gas, electric, telephone, fiber-optic, etc.) to prevent damage.
- Respond to emergency situations at any hour, including being "on call" at least one weekend per month.
- Locate valves, meters, and hydrants using maps, drawings, or GIS.
- Work safely and use appropriate PPE.
- Communicate respectfully with the public.
Requirements
- Valid NC Class C Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Ability to perform physically demanding manual work (lifting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, raking, climbing, standing, walking).
- Possess or obtain a CDL Class B license as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent GED.
- Willingness to work outdoors in adverse conditions (cold, hot, wet, muddy, greasy).
- Understanding of NC 811 utility locating requirements.
Qualifications
- Experience operating equipment (backhoe, mini excavator, track hoe, tractor) is advantageous but not required.
Special Requirements
- Must be able to work "on call" at least one weekend per month.
- Ability to locate underground utilities to prevent damage.
