Water Distribution Mechanic I
Description
Maintains a structurally sound water distribution system.
Performs repairs of all leaks, identifies areas in need of corrective action, monitors and documents locations of substandard water mains, fire hydrants, valves, services and meters.
Trouble shoots residential and commercial water meter problems; replacement of parts or full meter change outs.
Performs water taps of all sizes using various methods and equipment such as hydraulic and mechanical tools for the installation of all residential and commercial service lines and meters.
Performs repairs of all hydrants and valves in the system; ensures they are accessible and in proper working condition.
Performs repairs on system main lines of all types: PVC, Ductile Iron, Cast Iron, Galvanized and Asbestos Cement.
Analyzes system problems derived from materials extracted in the field during and after repairs.
Efficiently utilizes computer programs in the field such as GIS, ARCView, and MAXIMO/Syclo.
Performs proper excavation procedures using excavators and shoring materials to ensure individual/crew safety relative to safe trenching and shoring practices.
Performs installation of new water mains and services and replaces old lines/services that are detrimental to the system performance relating to water quality and overall service to our customers.
Responds to customer complaints related to the water distribution system (e.g. low pressure, water leaks, etc.).
Locates valves, mains, services and leaks in the field using electronic and mechanical detection equipment to make repairs and to assist contractors, engineering services, other utilities, etc.
Receives, prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence (i.e. low pressure reports, complaint/response forms, work orders, meter set requests, construction plans, etc.) and forwards/retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, customers, engineers, inspectors, contractors, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, and resolve problems.
Maintain tools, equipment and vehicles in optimal condition. To ensure public and employee safety, provides proper traffic control in the event work is being performed within affected distance of routine traffic and right-of-way areas.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in the operation/maintenance of distribution systems;
One to two years previous experience and/or training involving water systems;
Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. - Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License – Class A (after completion of the CDL training course) and a Water Distribution License – Level D (within one year of hire date).
- Computer skills with proficiency in Maximo, Microsoft Outlook, payroll software and GIS mapping.
- Skilled in oral, written and electronic communication with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
- Certified in traffic control
Skills
