Water Department Construction Worker

About the role

The Water Department Construction Worker performs construction, repair, and maintenance work on Water Department projects with emphasis on concrete, carpentry and masonry projects. The work is performed under the supervision of the Plumbing Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Performs concrete site preparation, forming, pouring, and finishing work on streets and roadways, curb, gutter, sidewalks, and driveways.
• Constructs and repairs concrete and masonry meter vaults and other structures as part of Water Distribution projects.
• Patches utility cuts in pavement.
• Aids plumbers in performing installation, maintenance and repair work on City water lines, service lines, hydrants and valves.
• Installs water meters, performs live main line taps, flushes lines and fire hydrants.
• Backfills, compacts and patches utility cuts in pavement.
• Transports gravel, sand, asphalt or other backfill material used to repair utility cuts and stockpiles sites.
• Performs snow and ice removal using equipment to plow, sand, and de-ice on City streets and sidewalks.
• May be assigned to assist with pulling pumps and cleaning water storage tanks.
• Assists in training other employees on operating equipment and trains to operate all equipment used by the Department.
• Performs general maintenance, construction, and repair on Water Department buildings and grounds.
• Operates equipment in the Department inventory including, but not limited to, excavators, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, compactors, and rollers.
• Maintains, services and repairs equipment and tools.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

  Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Flagging certification.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Class A CDL with specified endorsements.
  • Class I Drinking Water Distribution Operator certification.
  • Two or more years of masonry and concrete experience is preferred.

  Qualifications

  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and objectives of water line installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of concrete preparation, forming, pouring, and finishing work on streets and roadways, curb, gutter, sidewalks, and driveways.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of concrete and masonry construction.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of carpentry framing and finish work.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of asphalt preparation, laying, and finishing.
  • Building trade skills, including but not limited to, concrete and masonry, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, welding, and sheet metal fabrication.
  • State, local, and other applicable building, safety, and health codes and regulations.
  • Federal regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of powered equipment, repair and maintenance vehicles and equipment, power tools, and repair and maintenance materials.

  Skills

  • To prepare, form up, pour, and finish concrete in streets, roadways, curbs, gutters, and driveways.
  • To prepare, pour, and finish asphalt.
  • To patch utility cuts in roadways and streets.
  • To construct and maintain concrete and masonry meter vaults and other structures.
  • To read and interpret blueprints, plans, and diagrams.
  • To operate equipment including, but not limited to, excavators, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, compactors, and rollers.
  • To read and interpret Civil grade stakes.
  • To operate hand tools.
  • To operate power tools.
  • To operate a motor vehicle.
  • To perform general maintenance, construction, and repair on Water Department buildings and grounds.
  • To assist plumbers with installation and repair of water lines, service lines, hydrants, valves and meters.
  • To maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • To communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
  • To complete assignments in a timely fashion.
  • To understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations.
  • To perform all duties in accordance with City policies and procedures with regard for personal safety and that of other employees and the public.

  Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials or manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Sufficient visual acuity, speaking ability and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
