This program provides enterprise architecture, systems engineering, technology modernization, project management, and systems integration support for a large-scale, complex enterprise technology environment. The program is responsible for planning, designing, implementing, integrating, securing, and continuously improving enterprise technology capabilities that support mission operations, business objectives, and long-term modernization goals. The effort spans enterprise infrastructure, network services, cloud platforms, data centers, end-user computing, cybersecurity, applications, and shared services. Support includes current-state assessments, future-state architecture development, modernization roadmaps, technology evaluations, engineering analysis, requirements management, governance, and solution implementation oversight. The program enables the adoption of emerging technologies while ensuring interoperability, security, performance, resiliency, scalability, and operational sustainability across the enterprise. Services include enterprise and solution architecture, systems engineering, technology lifecycle management, cloud and infrastructure modernization, network transformation, platform integration, architecture governance, investment planning, risk management, requirements traceability, performance measurement, and operational readiness activities. The program supports the successful delivery and continuous improvement of mission-critical systems and enterprise technology services through disciplined engineering, governance, and modernization practices. Position Description: The WAN/LAN SME is responsible for the engineering, modernization, scalability, performance, and operational sustainability of enterprise network services spanning wide area networks (WAN), local area networks (LAN), cloud connectivity, data centers, remote sites, and hybrid environments. The role serves as the senior technical authority for network transport, routing, switching, network services, and connectivity architecture, ensuring secure, resilient, and high-performing communications across the enterprise. The WAN/LAN SME designs and implements network solutions that support organizational growth, cloud adoption, remote locations, content delivery requirements, and evolving mission demands. The individual works closely with cloud, security, infrastructure, application, and operations teams to develop network strategies, evaluate technologies, troubleshoot complex issues, optimize network performance, and guide the implementation of enterprise networking standards based on Cisco technologies and industry best practices. Responsibilities Design, engineer, and optimize enterprise WAN, LAN, campus, branch, remote-site, cloud, and hybrid network environmentsLead WAN modernization initiatives, including bandwidth expansion, circuit optimization, carrier integration, SD-WAN adoption, and network performance improvementsDesign and maintain enterprise routing architectures utilizing BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, policy-based routing, route redistribution, and high-availability networking strategiesDevelop scalable connectivity solutions supporting AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, SaaS providers, colocation facilities, and hosted service environmentsEngineer secure network connectivity between on-premises environments, cloud providers, partner organizations, and remote locationsDesign and support Cisco-based switching, routing, wireless, and network services infrastructure deployed across enterprise and remote sitesEvaluate network utilization, traffic patterns, latency, throughput, and application performance to identify capacity constraints and support long-term growth planningDevelop network architectures supporting content delivery, application acceleration, load balancing, DNS services, edge networking, and user experience optimizationPerform network assessments, technical analyses, root-cause investigations, and remediation planning for complex enterprise network challengesSupport network security requirements through segmentation, access control, zero-trust integration, network monitoring, and secure connectivity architecturesCreate and maintain network diagrams, implementation plans, standards, engineering documentation, configuration baselines, and operational runbooksProvide senior-level technical leadership, mentoring, architecture reviews, and engineering guidance to network operations and infrastructure teams. Requirements Required Skills Eight or more years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale enterprise WAN and LAN environmentsBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical fieldDeep expertise in enterprise routing and switching technologies, including BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, route redistribution, policy-based routing, and network convergenceExperience engineering Cisco enterprise networking solutions, including routers, switches, wireless infrastructure, and network security platformsExperience supporting enterprise WAN technologies, including MPLS, carrier circuits, Internet transport, VPN services, SD-WAN, and hybrid networking modelsExperience integrating enterprise networks with cloud providers, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and SaaS environmentsExperience performing WAN capacity planning, traffic engineering, network optimization, performance analysis, and growth forecastingStrong knowledge of DNS, DHCP, IPAM, load balancing, content delivery, application networking, and network resiliency conceptsExperience supporting geographically distributed organizations with branch offices, remote facilities, and field locationsExperience troubleshooting complex enterprise networking issues across cloud, carrier, data center, and remote-site environmentsAbility to communicate network engineering concepts and recommendations to technical teams, project leadership, and executive stakeholders Preferred Skills Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) Routing & Switching, Enterprise Infrastructure, or equivalent advanced networking certificationCisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Enterprise certificationExperience designing and implementing Cisco SD-WAN solutionsExperience with Cisco Catalyst, Nexus, Meraki, ACI, Identity Services Engine (ISE), and wireless networking platformsExperience supporting large-scale MPLS, carrier, and telecommunications environmentsExperience with cloud networking services, including AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, Google Cloud Interconnect, and hybrid cloud architecturesExperience with F5 load balancing, application delivery controllers, and content delivery technologiesExperience with network automation using Python, Ansible, Terraform, APIs, or infrastructure-as-code practicesExperience using SolarWinds, ThousandEyes, NetScout, Cisco DNA Center, or similar network monitoring and observability platformsExperience supporting federal agencies, highly distributed enterprise environments, or mission-critical network infrastructures Soft Skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to technical, operational, and executive audiencesStrong collaboration and relationship-building skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, cloud, cybersecurity, operations, telecommunications, and business teamsAbility to facilitate technical discussions, build consensus, and drive resolution of complex technical challenges involving multiple stakeholdersStrong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to evaluate alternatives, assess impacts, and make sound technical recommendationsDemonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to remain effective in high-pressure operational and outage situationsStrong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills with the ability to manage competing operational and project demandsAttention to detail and commitment to quality, accuracy, and operational excellenceAbility to mentor, coach, and share knowledge with engineers and technical teamsSelf-motivated and proactive with the ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with organizational prioritiesAdaptability and willingness to learn emerging technologies, networking trends, and evolving business requirements.
