Primary Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Elections Administration Supervisor, the primary purpose of this position is to distribute, update, and maintain voter information, and conduct election canvassing and administration in compliance with the New Mexico Election Code.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides general voter information regarding voter registration requirements, absentee voting, election schedules, and location of polling places.
  • Disseminates accurate information to voters and other citizens regarding voter information and the election process in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with procurement staff in budget and contract matters related to voter information, voter registration, and election activities.
  • Promptly and courteously responds to telephone calls and written communications.
  • Performs administrative functions and tasks on behalf of the County Clerk’s Office, the Bureau of Elections, Recording, and Records & Research divisions.
  • Trains other staff and election workers as requested.
  • Covers the front kiosk informational center and greets and assists visitors.
  • May serve as Notary Public with corresponding responsibilities.
  • Programs voting machines; gathers and delivers supplies between the warehouse and voting locations; collects ballots from drop boxes; moves voting equipment; and sets up signage at voting sites throughout the county.
  • Affords assistance with post-election canvassing duties: examines the election returns from each precinct to ascertain if election certificates were properly executed; and documents discrepancies, omissions, and errors pursuant to the Election Code.
  • Affords assistance as needed during peak election activities.
  • Affords assistance as needed to Records staff.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of basic office procedures and practices and preferably the functions of public service offices;
  • of data collection;
  • of records keeping and the preparation of correspondence;
  • of basic office equipment including computers;
  • of filing systems;
  • of English language usage;
  • and of basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to learn the New Mexico Election Code and procedures in order to answer voters' questions and operate properly during elections.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • and the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently or with others, under stressful circumstances, while maintaining a professional attitude with the public, co-workers, and County officials;
  • and Ability to meet deadlines and performance metrics.
  • Ability to understand technical terms, words, and phrases.
  • Ability to self-organize and perform detail-oriented job duties.
  • Skilled in operating various word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and other software programs in a Windows environment or ability to learn such skills.
  • Skilled in filing in alphabetical order, data entry, proofing, and updating computerized data.
  • Skilled in providing effective customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Any combination of college education and/or work experience in an office and/or warehouse environment totaling three (3) years.

Supplemental Information

  • Working Conditions: Work is generally performed in an office or warehouse setting and in the field, in varied weather conditions. Work schedule will include evening, weekend, and irregular hours during peak election and recording cycles. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Clarity of vision at short distance is required. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional interaction with hostile, violent, or offensive individuals.
  • May be subject to CRTs, VDTs, and UV rays.

Conditions Of Employment

  • Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening.
  • Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License, as incumbent will be required to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties.
