Volunteer Technical Manager

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced volunteer to lead the technical side of our digital projects. You'll oversee our developers and technical infrastructure, make key architecture and tooling decisions, and ensure our website, app, or platform is reliable, secure, and built to last — all while gaining hands-on experience leading tech for a mission-driven organization. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build technical leadership experience, mentor junior developers, or give back using existing engineering management skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee frontend, backend, and/or mobile development work and volunteer developers
• Make key technical decisions on architecture, tools, and platforms
• Review code, ensure quality standards, and unblock technical issues
• Manage hosting, deployment, security, and backups
• Translate non-technical team and stakeholder needs into technical requirements
• Plan sprints/timelines in coordination with the Project/Product Manager
• Document systems and processes for future volunteers and continuity
• Troubleshoot bugs, outages, and performance issues as they arise
• Mentor and support less experienced volunteer developers

Who You Are

• Experience in software development and/or engineering management
• Strong understanding of web/app architecture, hosting, and security best practices
• Comfortable managing a small technical team, including non-professional volunteers
• Clear communicator, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
• Organized and able to prioritize across competing technical needs
• Passionate about [cause area] and nonprofit work
• Experience with nonprofit tech stacks or low-budget/scrappy infrastructure is a plus
