What You'll Do Read the final laid-out manuscript and identify key terms, names, and concepts worth indexingBuild a clear, well-organized index with accurate page referencesCross-reference related terms and subtopics appropriatelyFollow standard indexing conventions and formattingCoordinate with the designer to ensure the index fits final page layoutDeliver the index in time for final publishing deadlines Who You Are Familiar with indexing standards and best practicesHighly organized and detail-orientedAble to think from a reader's perspective — what will someone want to look up?Prior indexing experience preferred (this is a specialized skill, distinct from proofreading)Comfortable working with finalized, paginated documents What You'll Gain Indexing credit on published nonfiction booksSpecialized, resume-worthy publishing experienceFlexible, remote volunteering
