About the role
Salem College, an NCAA Division III institution and member of the USA South Athletic Conference, invites applications for the position of Volunteer Assistant Basketball Coach. The Assistant Coach will assist the Head Coach in all aspects of the basketball program, including recruiting, athlete development, practice planning, meet preparation, and program operations.
The successful candidate will be passionate about coaching, mentoring student-athletes, and contributing to a culture of academic achievement, personal growth, and competitive excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with planning and conducting practices, workouts, and training sessions.
- Provide technical instruction and skill development in assigned event areas.
- Aid in meet preparation, competition strategy, and athlete performance evaluation.
- Recruit and retain qualified student-athletes who align with Salem College’s academic and athletic mission.
- Support the academic success, personal development, and well-being of student-athletes.
- Foster a positive team culture focused on accountability, leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
- Aid in travel planning, meet logistics, and team operations.
- Support fundraising efforts, community engagement activities, camps, and clinics.
- Aid in equipment management and facility preparation.
- Maintain compliance with NCAA Division III, USA South Conference, and Salem College policies and regulations.
- Aid in social media content, recruiting communications, and program promotion.
- Drive a college-owned 15-passenger van to transport student-athletes to practices, competitions, recruiting activities, and other team-related events as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics.

Qualifications
- HS Diploma required (bachelor’s degree Preferred)
- Previous playing and/or coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level preferred
- Strong knowledge of fundamentals, strategies, and player development
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
