Vocational Instructor 1-4 (Printing)

Duties

  • Teach trades and skills to residents and/or inmates of institutions/facilities under general supervision.
  • Prepare lesson plans, course outlines, trade analyses; may include shop layout planning, establishment of shop safety programs, maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Manage a classroom environment appropriately.
  • Meet each learner's individual needs and evaluate their progress as part of record‑keeping duties.
  • Utilize technology as part of instruction to enhance the educational setting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 1/SG-12: Either (1) four years of appropriate trade experience and a high school diploma or equivalency; (2) an associate’s degree in a related trade area and two years of appropriate trade experience; (3) a bachelor’s degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience.
  • VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 2/SG-13: Either (1) four years of appropriate trade experience and a minimum of 9 college credits in pedagogy core coursework from a NYSED‑approved program (3 credits each in human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction, and assessment); (2) an associate’s degree in a related trade area including or supplemented by 9 college credits of pedagogy core coursework (same distribution) AND two years of related trade experience; (3) a bachelor’s degree in any area including or supplemented by 9 college credits of pedagogy core coursework (same distribution) and one year of related trade experience.
  • VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 3/SG-15: Initial certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty issued by the New York State Education Department.
  • VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 4/SG-17: Professional certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty issued by the New York State Education Department.

Special notes: You may refer to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Teaching Initiatives for a description of experience requirements by specialty title. Candidates for Business and Distributive Education must have a bachelor’s degree and follow the New York State Education Department academic teacher certification guidelines. Candidates for Computer Technology must meet the minimum qualifications under option 2 or 3 for Vocational Instructor 1 or Vocational Instructor 2. Candidates for cosmetology/barbering must show proof of current licensure from the New York State Department of State to practice. A current license must be maintained to continue employment.

Language proficiency: must demonstrate proficiency in the Spanish language at a level that ensures the ability to perform the duties of the position properly.
