Qualifications
- Vocational Instructor 1/SG-12 Minimum Qualifications For Taking The Open Competitive Examination: Either 1. four years of appropriate trade experience and a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized state educational authority; Or 2. an associate’s degree in a related trade area and two years of appropriate trade experience; Or 3. a bachelor’s degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience.
- Special Notes: You may refer to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Teaching Initiatives for a description of experience requirements by specialty title. Candidates for Business and Distributive Education must have a bachelor’s degree and follow the New York State Education Department academic teacher certification guidelines. Candidates for Computer Technology must meet the minimum qualifications under option 2 or 3 for Vocational Instructor 1 or Vocational Instructor 2. Candidates for cosmetology/barbering must show proof of current licensure from the New York State Department of State to practice. A current license must be maintained to continue employment.
- Language Proficiency: must demonstrate your proficiency in the Spanish language. Proficiency must be at a level that would ensure your ability to perform the duties of the position properly.
- Vocational Instructor 2/SG-13 Minimum Qualifications For Taking The Open Competitive Examination: Either 1. four years of appropriate trade experience and a minimum of 9 college credits in pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; and curriculum, instruction, and assessment; Or 2. an associate’s degree in a related trade area including or supplemented by 9 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; AND two years of related trade experience; Or 3. a bachelor’s degree in any area including or supplemented by 9 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and one year of related trade experience.

- Vocational Instructor 3/SG-15 Minimum Qualifications for taking the Open Competitive Examination: Initial certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty as issued by the New York State Education Department.
