Visual Fields Technician - Ophthalmology

About the Role

This position is responsible for performing the Humphrey Visual Field test and other types of visual testing available in the department. Additionally, the role involves providing individualized, direct patient care to assigned patients under the supervision of the coordinator or physician. The job supports patients and families in restoring and maintaining ophthalmic health care goals, meeting JCAHO requirements, and aligning with organizational goals. The role works closely with the coordinator in implementing clinic policies, procedures, and goals.

Responsibilities

• Perform all types of visual fields and ancillary tests.
• Assist patients and physicians to ensure smooth operational flow.
• Thoroughly explain tests being performed and answer all patient questions regarding procedures.
• Ensure tests have a corresponding order from the requesting physician.
• Enter and sign an encounter progress note before closing the patient encounter.
• Clean, disinfect, and maintain all equipment and instruments in accordance with OSHA, infection control, and departmental standards.
• Check Symphony Web after each patient to ensure tests have imported properly.
• Transfer external digital photos from a digital camera into Symphony Web weekly.
• Ensure timely patient service by covering photography when no visual fields are scheduled.
• Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, method of introduction, and communication style.
• Remain knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory requirements applicable to the assigned area.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• One year of job-related or medical environment experience (preferred).
• CPR Certification as required by clinic policy.
• Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with Windows-style applications, keyboard, and role-specific software packages.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and high standards of performance.
• Ability to accurately obtain and transcribe patient-related information.
• Strong decision-making and prioritization skills.
• Flexibility to adapt to a changing and high-volume department.
• Ability to physically assist disabled patients from wheelchairs to exam chairs.
• Ability to stand and walk for long periods during patient care activities.

Physical and Environmental Demands

• Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Physical demand requirements exceed those for Sedentary Work, including significant walking or standing, pushing/pulling arm or leg controls, or working at a production-rate pace.
• Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue, and no requirement to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid.
• No occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
• Potential occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or waste within the healthcare environment.
