Field Service Technician

About the role

Performs electrical apparatus work onsite at customer facilities, including electrical testing, preventative maintenance, commissioning, upgrades, and repairs to electrical apparatus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the execution of mechanical and electrical tasks on equipment utilized in power transmission, distribution, and generation at customer facilities.
  • Read and interpret manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, replace, and clean all components in a substation.
  • Assist in the following tests:
    • Transformer Testing – Power factor, TTR, insulation resistance, SFRA, winding resistance, partial discharge, and leakage reactance.
    • Cable Testing – Insulation resistance, tan delta, hipot, TDR, partial discharge, and cable thumper.
    • Circuit Breaker Testing – Insulation resistance, contact resistance, power factor, breaker timing, SF6 gas analysis, CT testing, high current testing, secondary injection testing, and vacuum bottle integrity testing.
  • Participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s or associate degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology or military experience preferred but not required.
  • Zero to three years of relevant experience; this is an entry-level role in the industry.
  • Helpful experience includes mechanical aptitude, hands-on problem-solving, and a strong willingness to learn.
  • Must be willing to relocate within 60 miles of the hiring regional office.
  • Must be able to work overtime including nights, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Must be able to travel on overnight, multi-day, out-of-town projects.
  • Must rotate emergency on-call duty and respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle check, drug and alcohol test, and periodic, unannounced random testing.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain an endorsement to operate a combined vehicle weight up to 26k lbs.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver at least 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing to obtain company-paid TWIC card, OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30, MSHA, NFPA 70E, and CPR training.

Skills

  • Familiarity with industry standards such as NETA, NFPA 70E, OSHA compliance standards, safety laws, and DOT regulations.
  • Ability to assist in complex mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong PC skills including email, internet, data entry, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well under pressure to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Doble DTAF and Power DB knowledge preferred; training will be provided.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills including on-time reporting of time and expenses, weekly status reports, and documentation requirements.
  • Responsibility to keep tools, test equipment, and vehicles in clean, organized condition and up to date with service and calibrations.

Work Environment

  • Corporate business hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm, but hours outside of business hours will be required depending on the scope of work.
  • Work in close, but safe, proximity to live electrical substations.
