Job Functions

  • Determines the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the lensometer or autolensometer.
  • Performs the following test procedures on patients of all ages:
    • Confrontation fields
    • Humphrey visual fields
    • Virtual reality visual fields (VRVF)
    • Tangent screen visual fields
    • Amsler grid
  • Inserts and removes hard and soft contact lenses.
  • Administers eye drops.
  • Performs auto-refraction.
  • Educates patients on testing procedures.
  • Makes sure the progress of patients undergoing diagnostic testing and/or consultations in other areas/departments is monitored and facilitated.
  • Serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, and other departments.
  • Provides patient-centric care.
  • Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, and values.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Presents a professional appearance.
  • Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
  • Completes University of Miami mandatory in-services and online training.
  • Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
  • Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
  • Mets daily productivity goals.
  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated, and instrumentation is in proper working order.
  • Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
  • Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Performs organizational duties as assigned.
  • Makes suggestions to Physicians and/or Practice Managers regarding possible improvements in the practice.
  • Handles medical emergencies in adherence to hospital policy in a timely and competent manner while putting the patient’s safety and well-being first.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification and Licensing: Not specified.
  • Experience: 0-1 years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge, Skill, and Attitudes:
    • Performs basic computer skills.
    • Works well with patients of all age groups.
    • Presents with a professional appearance.
    • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.
    • Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
    • Sets aside instruction in areas that require additional knowledge.
    • Works independently and in a collaborative environment.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
