VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS ASSISTANT (2329)
About the role
Assists in the instruction and reinforcement of visual and performing arts. Provides arts instructional guidance to elementary, pre-kindergarten to sixth grade (PK-6), middle and/or high school students in the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Program. Assists in the implementation of the VAPA program’s standards across various disciplines such as visual arts, digital arts, music, drama, and dance.
Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of visual and performing arts instruction in accordance with California State Arts Standards and applicable grade level standards.
- Instructs arts skills, techniques, and elements of artistic expression.
- Supervises large groups of students during various arts activities, including visual arts, digital arts, music, drama, and dance.
- Prepares and moves arts materials and equipment, as needed, to assist in the arts program; teaches and supervises correct use of equipment and materials.
- Aids in activity arrangements, prepares bulletin boards and other displays of student artwork and performances as it relates to the site and arts activities.
- Oversees and participates in classroom behavioral expectations.
- Responds to children's questions and concerns related to arts activities.
- Administers written or performance-based assessments.
- Performs a variety of clerical tasks such as maintaining files and records, typing, preparing handouts, and operating various types of audio-visual and office equipment.
- Assists in class supervision on field trips to museums, performances, and other arts-related venues.
- Organizes culminating events.
- Performs related work as required.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- High School graduation or equivalent.
- Meet the requirements of “Every student succeeds” (ESSA) Act by possessing an Associate’s Degree or 48 semester units from an accredited institution or higher learning.
- Background experience with Visual and Performing Arts.
Qualifications
Desirable:
- Arts related coursework and/or certification in the arts.
- Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

Benefits
Salary: The beginning and ending salary steps are shown on each examination announcement. Employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate.
Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.
Sick Leave: One day of sick leave earned per month, accumulation is unlimited.
Retirement: All new employees who work half time or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are withheld from salary. Employees may become eligible for retirement at age 50 with a minimum of five years service.
As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination. Tests must be given by a District-approved physician.
Fingerprint Requirement: California state law requires that all classified employees be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees.
Certificate of Tuberculosis Examination: New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test.
Physical Examination: Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others.

Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Training (AB1432): As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reporter Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter.
Veterans Preference: Five additional points of credit are added in entry-level examinations to the final passing score of qualified veterans showing 30 days or more service during time of war (10 points for disabled veterans) upon presentation of proof of veterans' status (Form DD-214). This evidence must be presented during the examination procedure. No credit will be given after this period.
