Victim Assistance Coordinator
About the role
Victim Assistance Coordinators (VACs) at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office provide criminal justice information, emotional support, and notification of rights to victims of crime. They also assist with State Crime Victims' Compensation paperwork, Victim Impact Statements, translation for prosecutors, attend pre-trial meetings, provide court accompaniment, make referrals to community partners and services, and answer questions about the criminal justice process.
Responsibilities
- Make initial contact with victims
- Provide case updates
- Aid with State Crime Victims' Compensation paperwork
- Aid with the Victim Impact Statement (VIS)
- Translate for prosecutors (if bilingual)
- Attend pre-trial meetings
- Provide court accompaniment
- Make referrals to community partners and services
- Answer questions about the criminal justice process
Requirements
This position is contingent upon the continuation of grant funding. Funding is currently authorized through September 30, 2026.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Victim Studies, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or related field or ten (10) years of documented work experience working with victims of crime in a law enforcement, social services organization, or in a health care setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing to produce clear correspondence, concise histories, and properly documented records and reports.
Preferences
- Must be bilingual in English and Spanish, with the ability to speak, read, and write proficiently in both languages.
Pay
$65,603.20 annually
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours may vary based on the business needs of the department. May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
