About the role

Operates and adjusts valve guide compacting presses and furnaces. Performs visual and dimensional inspection at compacting and sintering operations, accountable for creating a quality product and ensuring customer requirements and Tenneco standards are met.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in training to produce quality product and use preventative measures to meet requirements.
  • Comply with legal and other requirements to avoid injury and/or ill health; identify potential emergency situations and report incidents to supervisor/manager.
  • Adhere to facility’s quality, environmental, health and safety Management Systems.
  • Read routers and production schedules for product specifications such as dimensions, tolerance, and number of parts to be processed and when; read special instructions as required.
  • Record inspection and production information using forms, logs, and computer systems.
  • Monitor product for specifications using micrometers, digital indicators, scales, hardness testers, optical comparators, digital controllers, flow gages, and visual aids.
  • Verify equipment settings (press settings, feeds and speeds, temperatures, cycle times, pressure settings and other controls) conform to specification using established standards.
  • Start, shut down, monitor, and operate compacting presses; make adjustments to press for weight and overall length.
  • Load, unload, and operate furnaces; monitor automation in front and back of furnaces.
  • Operate overhead hoists and hand jacks; load and unload pans, bins, baskets, trays, and other containers.
  • Use statistical data to determine conforming product; analyze and monitor scrap and nonconforming parts to aid in determining cause of failure.
  • Distribute powder into proper powder hoppers and to the proper press lines.
  • Monitor furnace temperatures, atmosphere, and belt speed for sintering process of parts.
  • Read, interpret, and follow all safety rules and regulations while performing operations.
  • Perform appropriate Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) of equipment and general cleaning.
  • Overtime is required as posted weekly and may be mandated for this position.
  • Level 1: Must complete training, written and practical assessment to progress to Level 2.
  • Level 2: Ability to perform line operator duties in VSI and VG; must complete training, written and practical assessment or meet requirements to train operators.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor/management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of one year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rates and ratios; knowledge of the metric system.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Highly motivated with ability to work independently and as an effective team player; above average mechanical ability.

Physical demands

  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Required to walk and climb or balance.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work environment

  • Frequently exposed to extreme heat.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Safety glasses and steel-toe shoes are required; hearing protection is required.
