About the Role

Operates and adjusts valve seat insert compacting presses and furnaces. Assists with the operation of valve seat insert steam and temper furnaces, cryo units, and oil impregnation units. Performs visual and dimensional inspections at the compacting, sintering, and steam/temper operations.

Responsibilities

  • Create a quality product and participate in training to meet customer requirements and Tenneco standards.
  • Comply with legal and safety requirements to ensure a safe working environment; report incidents to supervisors.
  • Adhere to the facility’s quality, environmental, health, and safety management systems.
  • Read routers and production schedules for product specifications, including dimensions, tolerances, and quantities.
  • Record inspection and production information using forms, logs, and computer systems.
  • Monitor product specifications using inspection equipment such as micrometers, digital indicators, scales, hardness testers, optical comparators, digital controllers, flow gages, and visual aids.
  • Verify equipment settings (press settings, feeds, speeds, temperatures, cycle times, pressure settings) for conformance to specifications.
  • Start, shut down, monitor, and operate compacting presses; make adjustments for weight and OAL (Overall Length).
  • Load, unload, and operate furnaces; monitor automation in front of and behind furnaces.
  • Operate overhead hoists and hand jacks.
  • Load and unload containers such as pans, bins, baskets, and trays.
  • Use statistical data to determine conforming product.
  • Analyze and monitor scrap and nonconforming parts to identify causes of failure.
  • Distribute powder into proper hoppers and press lines.
  • Monitor furnace temperatures, atmosphere, and belt speed for the sintering process.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations while performing operations.
  • Perform Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) on equipment and general cleaning.
  • Work overtime as required and posted weekly; may be mandated.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.

Levels

  • Level 1: Complete training, written, and practical assessments before advancing to Level 2.
  • Level 2:
    • Perform line operator duties in VG and VSI.
    • Complete training, written, and practical assessments or meet requirements to train operators.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; minimum of one year of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rates and ratios; knowledge of the metric system.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and as an effective team player.
  • Above-average mechanical ability.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Required to walk and climb or balance.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Frequently exposed to extreme heat and works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, and hearing protection are required.
