Veterinary Technician Internship Program Description
Rotation
- Interns rotate through various departments including Anesthesia, Behavior, Emergency/Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Medical/Surgical Unit departments.
- Each intern also completes 2 elective rotations in one of our other 20 specialties.
- During each rotation, interns work alongside clinical educators, veterinary technician specialists, technician preceptors, and veterinarians who guide the requirements and daily operations of the department.
- VTIs attend bi-monthly lectures and participate in wet and dry labs focusing on various clinical techniques.
- VTIs assist with consultations and interdepartmental transfers, and care for all animals admitted to the hospital.
Continuing Education
VTIs attend regular lectures and labs prepared exclusively for them.
Work Schedule
Full-time schedule with shifts varying depending on work assignments.
Evaluation
VTIs are evaluated periodically, with formal reviews conducted in writing and signed by the Education Coordinator.
Eligibility
- Candidates must have graduated from AVMA-accredited programs in Veterinary Technology or be expected to graduate prior to the start of the program.

- Cover letter describing career objectives and reasons for applying to the Veterinary Technician Intern Program
- Pass the VTNE by August 31st, 2026, and submit proof of passing score to LVTEducators@amcny.org.
- Obtain New York State Licensure before the start of the Internship.
Selection
A panel of Clinical Education team members reviews applications. Candidates are interviewed by phone, virtually, or in person, and selected candidates receive necessary materials for the start date.
Uniforms
Uniforms are provided by the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center.
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive internship rate with hourly wage increases upon obtaining New York State Licensure.
- Medical and dental benefits available to full-time employees after 60 days of employment.
- Paid Time Off and Extended Illness Bank accrue on the first day of employment.
- Retention bonus of $1,000 for those offered a full-time position at the end of the Internship.

- August 1st, 2026 – Deadline for applications to be submitted
- Week of August 10th, 2026 – Internship Interviews
- August 21st, 2026 – Notification of decision
- August 31st, 2026 – Deadline for submission of VTNE Score
- Monday, September 28th, 2026 – Internship start date
Pay Range
$30 - $31 USD
