Veterinary Intern

Texas A&M University’s Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department is dedicated to the well-being and care of all its patients. We work with clinicians and educators who share a passion for animals and for training the next generation of veterinarians.

About the role

Veterinary Interns are licensed veterinarians who, under general supervision, rotate through various veterinary specialty and service areas (typically 2–4 weeks each). Interns examine, diagnose, treat, and manage patients; interact with clients (animal owners); teach veterinary students; and generate income for the teaching hospital. The internship lasts one year.

Responsibilities

• Clinical rotations: under supervision, examine, diagnose, treat, and manage patients; conduct case management and procedures; communicate with clients regarding patient status, diagnoses, and procedures.
• Training: contribute to the training of graduate and undergraduate students; obtain post-graduate training under the supervision of licensed veterinary specialists.
• Rounds: participate in topic and patient rounds.
• Academic: complete an academic project during the internship.
• Seminar presentation: prepare and deliver one high-quality seminar to colleagues in the academic department.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• State of Texas Veterinary License.
• Passing score on the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and the Texas State Board examination.
• Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to diagnose and treat veterinary diseases.
• Outstanding entry-level medical knowledge.
• Ability to care for patients in collaboration with a medical team.
• Willingness and skill in instructing students.
• Stand on feet for extended periods; lift or move medium-weight objects and/or animals.
• Work beyond normal office hours and/or on weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
• Certification by the AVMA’s Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE).

Pay

Starting at $45,000/year, commensurate with education and experience.
