Veterinary Extern - General Practice
About the role
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will provide students with unique insights into the daily operations of veterinary practices. Despite the diversity among NVA hospitals, they share commonalities such as a supportive and dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality care.
Responsibilities
- Gain hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of Associate Veterinarians at Stoney Brook Veterinary Hospital.
- Participate in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, conducting diagnostics, providing dental services, and assisting/supervising surgical procedures.
- Develop and apply medical management skills to patient care.
- Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Requirements
Veterinary students (all classes) are welcome to participate in NVA externships. Those in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
Qualifications
Students should have completed prerequisite coursework and possess strong academic performance. No prior clinical experience is required.
Skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Basic knowledge of veterinary medicine is beneficial but not mandatory.
Benefits
Externship experiences typically last 2 to 8 weeks, tailored to fit individual and hospital schedules.
