Job Description

An externship experience at Chickasaw Trail Animal Hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience.

About the Role

Although every NVA hospital is unique, Chickasaw Trail Animal Hospital shares common elements such as a supportive, committed, and service-oriented environment. Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in various aspects of veterinary practice, including:

  • Gathering patient histories
  • Performing physical exams
  • Creating treatment plans
  • Diagnostics
  • Dentistry services
  • Observing or assisting/serving as a surgical assistant
  • Medical management of patients

Students will also practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Responsibilities

Most externship experiences at Chickasaw Trail Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. Students are encouraged to participate regardless of their class year.

Requirements

Students must be enrolled in a veterinary school and have completed prerequisite coursework. They should be prepared to commit to the full duration of the externship and be available during regular business hours.

Qualifications

While not specified, students should demonstrate strong academic performance and a commitment to veterinary medicine.

Skills

Students should possess good interpersonal skills, be able to work independently, and have a basic understanding of veterinary medicine.
