Veterinary Extern - General Practice
About the role
We are a busy Mixed Animal Practice on the North Fork of Long Island. Our practice has been in operation since 1994 and is known for its family-oriented staff. We have six doctors who are skilled at mentoring, including our large animal veterinarian who enjoys teaching. We currently mentor LIU veterinary students during their second through fourth years. Our staff includes seven licensed veterinary technicians and a supportive team. We collaborate with local animal shelters and have a board-certified surgeon and internist available for complex cases.
Responsibilities
- Gain experience in gathering patient histories
- Perform physical exams
- Create treatment plans
- Diagnose and manage conditions
- Assist with dental care
- Observe and assist with surgical procedures
- Manage medical care for patients
- Work closely with the supervising veterinarian
- Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Qualifications
Veterinary students (all classes) are welcome to participate in our externship programs. Students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend of $1,000.
