Veteran's Services Coordinator

Acts as a liaison for Cleveland County Veterans, connecting them with agencies or individuals to help secure earned benefits. Provides advocacy, benefit counseling, claims assistance, and outreach services for U.S. Veterans, their dependents, and survivors. Works with support services to address Veteran concerns and collaborates with the Criminal Justice system and legislators to improve services.

Responsibilities

  • Meets with Veterans and/or dependents to assess needs and eligibility for assistance through individual calls or in-person visits.
  • Works with the Criminal Justice system and Legislators to link Veterans with relevant agencies in Cleveland County.
  • Directs clients to community agencies for additional assistance.
  • Meets with Legislators to discuss Veterans' needs and suggest service improvements.
  • Interprets relevant laws for applicants and directs them to proper authorities.
  • Develops and maintains the budget for Veterans Services.
  • Travels and speaks with civic groups, clubs, and concerned organizations to share information about Veterans services and benefits.
  • Determines primary eligibility and prepares claims for service-connected disabilities; composes letters with pertinent facts.
  • Researches grant opportunities, collects data, and writes grants for additional funding.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of experience in a social service environment with considerable public contact in a professional setting; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Military background preferred.
  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license with a satisfactory motor vehicle record.

Skills

  • Knowledge of current laws relating to Veterans benefits and programs of state, federal, and other agencies.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and control.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and follow verbal/written instructions.
  • Ability to give clear verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to concentrate.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Ability to make decisions, meet schedules, and honor commitments.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and solve practical problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, professionalism, and tact when interacting with Veterans and their dependents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • High level of responsibility, integrity, and drive.
  • Sincere, honest, and cheerful demeanor.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Use of standard office equipment; long hours sitting, walking, or standing.
  • Required to talk, listen, and occasionally lift/move up to 25 pounds.
  • Close vision abilities required.
  • Noise level ranges from minor to moderate depending on work location.
  • Primary work environment is an office setting, with travel required to meet with Veterans, dependents, agencies, and service providers.
  • Work schedule is typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional extended hours as needed.
