Vending Machine Technician

About the Role

Positions in this job family are responsible for the setup, repair, installation, and removal of automated vending and merchandising equipment for the Business Enterprise Program. This role supports Licensed Managers who are Blind or visually impaired by providing training on equipment use and maintenance.

This position may be filled at Level I (entry) or Level II (career). The role is located in Oklahoma City within the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired - Business Enterprise Program.

Extensive travel throughout Oklahoma is required. Applicants must be willing to perform all job-related travel.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, install, set up, and remove automated vending and merchandising equipment.
• Diagnose, repair, and refurbish a wide variety of automated vending and merchandising equipment.
• Repair, replace, or replenish broken or missing parts, including bulbs, shelves, LEDs, buttons, decals, and mechanical/electronic components; use technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and testing devices like electrical circuit testers.
• Provide in-service and on-the-job training on equipment operation and routine maintenance to Licensed Managers who are Blind or visually impaired, or to lower-level staff.
• Maintain vehicle inventory of parts, tools, and supplies; restock as needed.
• Manage parts inventory in a clear, safe, and orderly condition; maintain a clean and organized workspace.
• Use hand and power tools (e.g., hammer, drill, power screwdriver, skill saw, soldering irons) to perform duties.
• Lift and load heavy equipment (100+ pounds) on and off vehicles at customer locations and in-warehouse, with or without assistance; use forklifts, dollies, or other tools.
• Follow agency standards for documentation, including writing reports, preparing repair cost estimates, recommending parts for order, and maintaining daily records of equipment, parts, and merchandise.
• Prepare and maintain required maintenance schedules and reports.
• Follow prescribed safety measures and procedures.

Level-Specific Duties

• Level I (Entry): Receive training in setup, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and removal of equipment; maintain parts inventory; learn documentation guidelines; keep workspace clean and organized; establish effective relationships with Licensed Managers and staff; learn safe operation of tools and heavy equipment, including forklifts and vehicles.
• Level II (Career): Perform all functions of the position; may act as Lead Technician, assigning work and resolving equipment issues; consult with manufacturers for quality assurance; develop and coordinate logistics for new equipment purchases and installations; advise agency staff and manufacturers on adaptations for Licensed Managers who are Blind or visually impaired; provide training, expertise, or supervision to lower-level staff.

Requirements

• Valid Oklahoma driver’s license (required for some positions to operate state-owned vehicles).
• Ability to walk, sit, or stand for extended periods; bend at waist and knees; perform overhead reaching; stoop; climb stairs; and drive state-owned vehicles.
• Availability to work extended hours when assigned.
• Some positions are designated as safety-sensitive under 63 O.S. § 427.8.

Qualifications

• Level I:
  • Two years of experience in vending machine or small appliance maintenance or repair; or
  • One year of experience in vending machine or small appliance maintenance or repair plus certification as a Vending Technician at all three levels of the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA); or
  • Completion of an Associate Degree and/or Vocational Technical certification in Electrical Construction and Maintenance, Refrigeration, Small Appliance Repair, or Vending Machine Repair; or
  • Electrical certification from an accredited vocational technical school or community college.
• Level II:
  • Two years of experience in vending machine or small appliance maintenance or repair plus two years of experience working with vending/merchandising machines, refrigeration, or small appliance installation, maintenance, or repair; or
  • One year of experience in vending machine or small appliance maintenance or repair plus NAMA Vending Technician certification at all three levels plus two years of experience working with vending/merchandising machines, refrigeration, or small appliance installation, maintenance, or repair; or
  • Completion of an Associate Degree and/or Vocational Technical certification in Electrical Construction and Maintenance, Refrigeration, Small Appliance Repair, or Vending Machine Repair plus two years of experience working with vending/merchandising machines, refrigeration, or small appliance installation, maintenance, or repair; or
  • Electrical certification from an accredited vocational technical school or community college plus two years of experience working with vending/merchandising machines, refrigeration, or small appliance installation, maintenance, or repair.

Skills

• Level I:
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, automated vending, and/or merchandising systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical concepts for troubleshooting and repairing appliances.
  • Knowledge of small business management and installation/repair of subassemblies (e.g., coin machines, bill acceptors).
  • Ability to perform basic household repairs (plumbing, circuits, fuses, electrical components).
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work independently, use sound judgment, and solve problems.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and pay attention to details.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to advise Licensed Managers on equipment usage.
  • Ability to write reports and provide good customer service.
• Level II:
  • All skills required for Level I, plus:
  • Knowledge of basic refrigeration systems and adapted techniques/devices for the Blind and visually impaired.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and evaluate vending machines.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make decisions in accordance with rules, laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to provide training and guidance to others.
  • Ability to provide consultation and clearly describe rules, laws, adapted techniques, work procedures, equipment, and facilities.

Pay

• Level I (Pay Band G): $3,257.95 monthly / $39,095.40 annually
• Level II (Pay Band H): $3,420.10 monthly / $41,041.20 annually
