Vehicle Equipment Tech III - Facilities Planning and Management

This position reports directly to the Landscaping & Grounds Manager for general direction. The typical working schedule is Monday-Friday 6:00 am-2:00 pm. Must be available for winter weather emergencies outside of regular working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and on a 24-hour emergency call list during winter.

About the role

Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on ground maintenance vehicles and equipment, and operate equipment in support of seasonal grounds maintenance tasks. Responsibilities include plowing and winter management duties as needed.

Responsibilities

• Operate, complete safety inspections and road tests, and maintain University and grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment including mowers, loaders, trucks, tractors, plows, sanders, salters, hand tools, and related equipment.
• Document completed maintenance and repairs according to established policies and procedures.
• Establish and maintain preventive maintenance programs for equipment, including service records and documentation.
• Order replacement parts and supplies, coordinate with vendors, and recommend equipment purchases.
• Provide operation and safety training for equipment to employees and student workers; recommend safe and efficient work practices.
• Act as a lead, providing technical guidance and supporting the grounds team.

Requirements

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an automotive shop, fleet service department, or related setting.
• Ability to attain UW System driver authorization within the first week of employment.
• Brand-specific experience with Bobcat machinery, including operation, troubleshooting, and repairs.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, including the ability to safely operate, inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles, grounds equipment, and hand and power tools.
• Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical system issues; interpret technical manuals, schematics, and parts documentation.
• Knowledge of safe work practices, OSHA standards, hazard recognition, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to perform preventive maintenance, maintain accurate service records, and manage equipment lifecycle and repair activities.
• Proficiency in basic computer systems for work order entry, recordkeeping, and maintenance tracking.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with supervisors, coworkers, and vendors.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond to emergencies or operational needs outside regular work hours.
• Basic mathematical skills for measurements, calculations, and material or cost estimates.
• Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Class A CDL.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 25 pounds repeatedly, 50-70 pounds frequently, and heavier objects occasionally.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work, including bending, twisting, stooping, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions and engage in strenuous activity consistent with the trade.

Pay

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting hourly wage of $21.00/hr.
