About the role

Covia is seeking a dynamic Utility Operator for its Fort Smith, AR location. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and productive operation of plant equipment to produce quality products.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with applicable MSHA regulations and procedures.
  • Accept personal responsibility for maintaining a safe work environment and evaluating tasks using the SLAM risk protocol.
  • Report near misses, unsafe acts, and injuries immediately.
  • Operate equipment safely and efficiently, reducing damage, downtime, and maintaining product quality.
  • Perform physical manual labor, including shoveling, sweeping, carrying material, and climbing ladders.
  • Operate various plant equipment, such as bucket elevators, ball mills, belt and pneumatic conveyors, dust collectors, kilns, screens, and more.
  • Maintain equipment, monitor processes, and adjust as necessary.
  • Complete paperwork accurately and professionally.
  • Assist with continuous improvement projects.
  • Conduct pre-shift and routine inspections, ensuring safe work environments.
  • Communicate inspection findings to supervisors and operators.
  • Manage material flow and perform sample collection and analysis.
  • Safely operate and manage rail car and truck loading/unloading activities.
  • Operate forklifts and perform housekeeping duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience in kiln or ball mill operations preferred.
  • Experience in heavy industry, mineral processing, or manufacturing preferred.
  • Commitment to safety and health with previous experience in risk management.
  • Ability to operate computer programs as required.
