About the role

Performs responsible semiskilled work in the installation, construction, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines and appurtenances. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain and repair water and sewer lines and appurtenances
  • Install water and sewer lines; repair line leaks
  • Repair lift station pumps; replace wiring, float, check valves, PVC pipe, etc.
  • Respond to service calls; repair pumps and wiring
  • Complete daily reports and service orders
  • Repair sewer and water lines and related facilities
  • Unstop sewer lines with sewer rodding machine
  • Operate trucks and lawn mowers in connection with assigned tasks

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines
  • General knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances; general knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools
  • Some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment
  • Ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public

Requirements

Utility Maintenance Worker I: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and sewer lines. Education requirement may be waived as determined by the Department Head.

Utility Maintenance Worker II: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and sewer lines. Possession of Grade-C Water Distribution or Grade-I Wastewater Certification as issued by the State of North Carolina.

Utility Maintenance Leadworker: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in water and sewer line maintenance or construction work. Possession of Grade-C Water Distribution and Grade-I Wastewater Collections certifications issued by the State of North Carolina.

Special Requirements

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.
