Utilities Plant Operator - Water Treatment (R.W. Neilson Water Treatment Plant)

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and minimal experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Aids the Senior Utilities Plant Operator in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plant and equipment.
• Makes regular tours of the plant to check engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, and other equipment for proper functioning.
• Records readings from meters and instruments; performs specific laboratory tests.
• Reports defects to maintenance personnel.
• Substitutes for the senior operator in their absence.
• Maintains water plant operations and distribution via SCADA.
• Adjusts chemical dosages under the direction of the senior operator.

Physical Requirements

• Occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.
• Sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, frequent repetitive motions, occasional standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
• Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
• Visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
• Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, working with explosives, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus, exposure to bloodborne pathogens, and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
• Exposure to carcinogens and exposure to E-coli.

Required Documentation

• Pass a validated job assessment skills test which includes math (minimum passing score 70%).
• Pass NC State B Surface Certification as per the City's operator policy.
• Within a reasonable timeframe, pass the Hard-To-Fill Sign-On Incentive Policy.
