Utilities Building Maintenance Specialist I

Annual hiring salary: $46,871 – $49,579. Full salary range for this position: $46,871 – $71,431.

About the role

Performs a broad range of maintenance and construction duties—including carpentry, roofing, framing, electrical, and plumbing—on buildings, grounds, and equipment found in water and wastewater facilities. Reports to the Waste Water Collections Superintendent.

Responsibilities

• Performs light construction, repairs, and maintenance to buildings, grounds, and structures used to provide water and wastewater service (carpentry, roofing, framing, electrical, plumbing).
• Performs grounds maintenance: clearing ditches and fence lines, cutting grass, edging, lawn restoration.
• Develops material lists, obtains pricing, and creates purchase requests for projects.
• Monitors work of supply or service contractors.
• Cleans, prepares, and applies protective coatings to wood, metal, concrete, or other surfaces (buildings, floors, water storage tanks).
• Uses computer skills to generate and close work orders to track job status.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures.
• Ability to act as a public representative of the Commission.
• Strong knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair practices related to building and grounds maintenance (construction, electrical, plumbing, mechanical).
• Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures for operating, repairing, removing, and installing equipment/materials.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public.
• Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records (job estimates, material pricing, purchasing).
• Ability to wear appropriate PPE for chemical protection, including respiratory gear.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and one to two years of job-related experience.
• Equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience may substitute on a full-time, year-for-year basis.
• Valid Maryland Class C driver’s license.

Physical demands

• Occasional strenuous effort, handling tools, equipment, or materials of 30 to 60 pounds or more.
• Exposure to potentially dangerous situations or environmental stress (aggressive behavior, extreme weather, confined spaces).
