Upward Bound Coach (Hancock High School)

Essential Duties

• Aid in the recruitment of new UB students for the upcoming academic year and during the academic year when vacancies occur.
• Regularly review grades with students via StudentVue to discuss progress and make necessary improvements for school success.
• Contact teachers and parents of failing students and parents at least once per marking period and semester to address academic progress and make improvements.
• Document conversations and meetings with students about their future plans and goals monthly for the UB Manager or Advising/Assessment Specialist.
• Schedule and supervise after-school tutoring sessions for one hour twice per week.
• Aid in scheduling additional tutors during weekly tutoring sessions at WCPS and ensure attendance sheets are accurate and complete.
• Mentor students regarding secondary program of studies, future college plans, or provide alternative assignments when they have no homework.
• Supervise and chaperone a minimum of 80% of the field trips and UB activities during the academic year.
• Participate in TRiO Upward Bound staff development meetings twice a year (fall and spring).

Requirements

• Secondary Teacher Certification and bachelor’s degree required; must be a WCPS teacher working at Hancock High School.
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills; proficiency in computer applications; ability to work independently and accurately; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students and others of diverse backgrounds.
• The College agrees to allow this part-time grant-funded position to access WCPS data systems for purposes of the Upward Bound project.
• Will meet frequently with the Coordinator and/or the Advising and Assessment Specialist to discuss student progress.

Working Environment

Predominantly classroom environment with the potential for student interruptions. Additional environments may include office environments, campus/school events, or field trips. Minimal lifting is required for this position.
