About the role

Under the direction of the Nursing Coordinator in a state hospital, the Unit Supervisor (Safety) is responsible for the overall management and supervision of an organized unit on a 24-hour basis, providing care to patients. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, supervising, training, educating, and evaluating the work of nursing and other assigned staff. Candidates must be willing to work in any Unit/Program and any Shift to meet the needs of the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise an organized unit on a 24-hour basis in a state hospital.
  • Plan, assign, supervise, train, educate, and evaluate nursing and other assigned staff.
  • Ensure the delivery of care to patients within the unit.

Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in California as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Possession of a valid license to practice as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technicians.

Additionally, one year of experience performing the duties of a nursing classification comparable in responsibility to a Registered Nurse, Range B, or Senior Psychiatric Technician classification in the direction of nursing services for a California developmental center, State hospital, Psychiatric Program, or correctional facility level-of-care unit during a shift.

Qualifications

  • Reinstatement eligibility.

Training Expectations

If selected, attendance at New Employee Orientation (NEO) is mandatory. NEO can be scheduled Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., for up to 30 days for level of care staff (clinical).

Pay

$9,238.00 - $10,282.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Schedule

Full-time, 12-month limited term position. In-office work location in Los Angeles County.

Opened in 1916, DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital is located in the vibrant community of Norwalk, 15 miles east of Los Angeles. The hospital operates approximately 826 beds and treats patients under the following commitment categories:

  • Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act
  • Incompetent to Stand Trial (PC 1370)
  • Offenders with Mental Health Disorders (Penal Code Section 2964/2972/2974)
  • Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (PC 1026)

The hospital has an open campus within a security perimeter.
