About the role

This position provides patient care based on the principles and practices of Practical Nursing, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. It also includes clerical, receptionist, dispatching, and admitting/discharge duties in support of assigned patient care departments.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and admit patients, prepare patient identification bands, and collect and report objective and subjective data.
  • Assist physicians and the Registered Nurse with examinations and procedures, provide therapeutic procedures, and practice AIDET.
  • Utilize supplies cost-effectively, assist in patient and family education, and coordinate ongoing communication.
  • Complete discharge functions, schedule follow-up appointments, and fax appropriate information.
  • Accept accountability for care provided by self and delegated care, enter physician orders accurately, and phone in consults.
  • Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, IV, and oral medications, and obtain and complete laboratory orders.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Licensed Practical Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

Qualifications

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for greeting and admitting functions upon patients’ arrival to the department.
  • Provides direct patient care and therapeutic procedures to all assigned patients to promote comfort.
  • Aids physicians and the Registered Nurse with examinations and procedures, as assigned.
  • Utilizes available supplies in a cost-effective manner to help contain patient costs.
  • Contributes to the nursing assessment by collecting, reporting, and recording objective and subjective data in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Seeks guidance from Registered Nurse in delivery of nursing care as necessary.
  • Notifies referring physician of admission, as required.
  • Aids in assigned patient and family education and rehabilitation by reviewing patient needs with the Registered Nurse and following the teaching plan.
  • Completes discharge in the computer and fax copies of appropriate information to designated areas.
  • Maintains competency in IV insertion.
  • Safely administers intramuscular, subcutaneous, IV and oral medications as assigned.
  • Enters into EPIC System any written and/or telephone physician orders in an accurate, consistent, and timely manner.
  • Assists physicians and other individuals by providing requested information about specific patient or department routines in accordance with the hospital’s policy on Release of Patient Information.
  • Phones in consults to other services in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Coordinates and facilitates ongoing communication to ensure efficient intradepartmental and interdepartmental operations.
  • Coordinates and facilitates ongoing communication to ensure timely, efficient intradepartmental and interdepartmental transportation of patients.
  • Obtains and completes laboratory orders accurately and according to hospital protocol.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates competency as appropriate in patient care assessment for each patient population area served: Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the dynamics for each patient incorporating biophysical, bio-psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and discharge planning needs.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of cardiac rhythms with a rhythm test to follow.

Physical Requirements

Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning of patients, standing, walking, carrying or patients, materials and equipment weighing 40+ lbs.
