Unit Coordinator
About the role
The Unit Coordinator/Secretary at South Shore Health's Med Surg Pratt 3 department is responsible for coordinating nursing staff, patients, physicians, and other hospital departments. This role also includes performing general receptionist and clerical duties to ensure efficient unit functioning.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates professional courtesy in all interactions and acts as a resource person to nursing staff, other clinicians, and support services.
- Interacts with patients and families in a compassionate and humanistic manner, showing empathy, sensitivity, and patience.
- Utilizes technological solutions to improve work processes and practices, including accessing Lotus Notes for email and other resources.
- Orders necessary supplies from Stores or other departments, collaborates with the Operations Supervisor to maintain par levels, and orders from outside vendors.
- Maintains a safe environment by fostering a "Culture of Safety," adhering to CDC hand hygiene guidelines, and ensuring compliance with universal precautions and personal protective equipment.
- Completes daily chart audits, completes shift-to-shift reports, and conducts shift rounds to ensure the accuracy and safety of patient care.
- Ensures discharge disposition is entered accurately and in a timely manner, and coordinates the faxing of necessary paperwork and medication reconciliation.
- Works as a preceptor for new employees, demonstrates dependability and flexibility, and utilizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills in both routine and emergency situations.
- Communicates appropriately and effectively using the chain of command and brings potential compliance issues to management.
- Ensures the unit environment meets regulatory requirements and maintains awareness of MSDS sheets and their proper handling.
- Conveys respect for the values, preferences, and expressed needs of patients and families, collaborates with them in planning, implementing, and evaluating care, and welcomes family members at all times according to patient preferences.
- Considers the individual needs of each person with whom they interact, possesses age and cultural knowledge and awareness, and effectively utilizes resources to provide care to diverse populations.
Requirements
Preferred qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, basic computer knowledge, and the ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately. The role requires dealing efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
Qualifications
Knowledge of basic medical terminology is preferred, but not required.

Day shift, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, 5 shifts per week
