About the Role
Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs receptionist and secretarial duties on the assigned unit, meeting the communication needs of patients, families, departmental staff, and medical staff. Supports nursing staff by performing specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs, maintaining a safe and clean work environment, and upholding patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights.
Responsibilities
- Performs purposeful hourly rounding including pain, position, personal needs, and possessions.
- Promptly answers telephone/call lights in a polite manner and relays pertinent information to the appropriate staff.
- Assists nursing staff with patient care by making beds, giving baths, passing waters, feeding patients, providing oral care, tracking accurate Intake & Output, assisting with mobilization/ambulation, daily weights, performing bedside glucose testing, and obtaining vital signs.
- Greets patients/families upon arrival and assists in transporting patients to and from other units and test areas.
- Ensures all rooms and work areas are clean and tidy (e.g., patient rooms, clean utility, soiled utility). Cleans and properly stores IV poles, suction machines, commodes, and other equipment.
- Prepares rooms for new patients upon discharge, including removal of patient care equipment and supplies (e.g., IV poles, commodes, urinals, suction canisters).
- Accurately transcribes and processes physician orders.
- Orders and maintains supplies and forms.
- Maintains census board of admissions, discharges, and transfers, and completes assigned logs.
- Maintains appropriate documentation, updates charts accurately and timely, and anticipates admits/discharges to ensure proper paperwork is in place.
- Observes cardiac monitors and reports alarms to the appropriate nursing staff or Charge Nurse.
- Processes orders in the computer system before noting as completed.
- Requisitions tests as ordered, completes necessary forms, and notifies consultations timely.
- Assists in directing patients/families as needed and treats all with respect.
- Interacts professionally with patients/families, providing explanations and verbal reassurance.
- Utilizes the electronic record for documentation.
- Assists with patient positioning, picking up and delivering items to other departments, and setting up/taking down traction.
- Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, co-workers, physicians, and other healthcare members.
- Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
- Maintains unit logs as required.
- Maintains an orderly unit environment with sufficient supplies and equipment to facilitate staff performance.
- Performs all other department-related duties as assigned by the RN.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a Nurse Aide training program, OR 6 months of experience as a Nursing Assistant in a healthcare facility, OR completion of fundamentals of nursing (if enrolled in a Nursing program).
- BLS certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent, required before start date and valid at least 60 days beyond start date.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current State of Michigan CNA certification.
- Previous data entry experience.
Schedule
Part-time, 48 hours per pay period.
- Daily work times: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM.
- Weekends: Yes.
- On-call: No.
