Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to crews to ensure safe, efficient, and quality operations.
  • Ensure thorough knowledge and adherence to safety policies and guidelines by the crew.
  • Oversee overhead and underground distribution construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operations, including extensive switching experience.
  • Install, troubleshoot, replace, and/or remove common underground distribution equipment such as padmount transformers, underground switchgear, primary and secondary underground cabling, pole risers, and switches.
  • Plan work, including manpower, equipment, and material needs, and develop "look ahead" schedules.
  • Ensure work progress, equipment, and construction sites are safe, specifications are met, and work is completed on schedule.
  • Ensure proper utilization, care, and security of company and customer tools and materials.
  • Collaborate with General Foreman, crew members, and customers to solve problems and optimize scheduling, technology, techniques, and equipment.
  • Assist crew members with construction activities using hand tools or other equipment.
  • Ensure timely requests for equipment and machinery repairs to minimize work delays and maintain safety.
  • Provide on-the-job training and development for crew members in construction methods, equipment operation, safety procedures, and company policies.
  • Support General Foreman/Project Managers in meeting company goals and objectives.
  • Suggest or initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, or hires, and assist in recruiting qualified applicants.
  • Ensure adherence to all company policies, processes, work practices, goals, and objectives by crew members.
  • Maintain positive relationships with crew members, existing customers, and potential customers.
  • Complete and submit required forms and paperwork, including Job Safety Analyses, electronic driver's logs, vehicle inspections, line tools/equipment inspections, timesheets, expense reports, incident reports, and redlined work orders.
  • Perform required inspections of tools and equipment, such as rubber gloves, blankets, line hoses, insulated booms, hot line sticks, and insulated equipment handles.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, humidity, and exposure to outdoor elements.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds and carry that weight a minimum of 20 feet on a regular, recurring basis.
  • Ability to walk over uneven, steep, or difficult terrain for distances of over one mile on a regular, recurring basis.
  • Perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Carry 25 pounds of gear while working in an aerial lift device with a weight limit of 350 pounds.
  • Lift, push, pull, or carry objects using abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Ability to climb up to and onto elevated equipment and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to quickly move arms and legs and possess excellent stamina.
  • Ability to hear long distances, see long distances, differentiate between colors, and have depth perception.

Schedule

This is a full-time position that frequently requires long hours and weekend work. The role may require travel for storm recovery, with the length of stay dependent on the volume of work.

Travel

The position primarily involves out-of-town work during the workweek, requiring weekly overnight travel. Out-of-area and extended travel is common and dictated by customer demand and power outages related to natural disasters. Must be available to travel for work routinely and with very little notice.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience working on and around energized high-voltage primary electric lines.
  • Valid CDL-A license with a clear driving record.
  • Ability to read and understand technical information, manuals, policies, procedures, work orders, blueprints, spec books, system maps, and diagrams.
  • Planning and organizational skills to delegate work, schedule crews, assign duties, and ensure project completion within deadlines.
  • Good mathematical skills to calculate figures and amounts.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations, hazardous conditions, multiple priorities, frequent interruptions, and time constraints.
  • Strong communication skills to relay expectations, company goals, and objectives to crew members.
  • Leadership skills to provide guidance and training to assigned personnel in a safe, effective, and positive manner.
  • Ability to understand and use the English language, both oral and written, to communicate information and instructions.
  • Dependable and trustworthy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an apprentice program or technical training as a lineman.
  • Multiple years in a Journeyman Lineman classification.
