Ultrasound Technologist (Full Time)

Under the direction of the radiologists and the supervision of the Imaging Services Cardiopulmonary Director, the Ultrasonographer utilizes high-frequency ultrasound to produce images for OB/GYN, abdominal, peripheral vascular, carotid Doppler, and small parts studies.

Responsibilities

• Recognize the significance of all structures visualized and differentiate artifact from normal or pathologic processes.
• Recognize equipment limitations and utilize ultrasound units and other equipment to produce images in accordance with hospital, departmental, regulatory, and industry standards.
• Maintain proficiency on all equipment within this scope of practice.
• Properly introduce yourself to the patient, review practitioner’s orders, and perform the appropriate test(s).
• Prepare patients for examinations, correlate clinical history with the procedure, explain the procedure, and properly scan patients for the exams ordered.
• Choose correct technical factors for each patient and exam.
• Assess the patient for risk or potential of neglect or abuse and make referrals as appropriate.
• Report complaints of pain to appropriate medical personnel.
• Assist radiologists with special procedures (e.g., ultrasound-guided biopsies, fine needle aspirations).
• Maintain diagnostic equipment in proper working condition.
• Ensure proper recording of patient charges for billing purposes.
• Appropriately utilize and maintain the glutaraldehyde soak station to disinfect endo-cavity probes.
• Retrieve patient film jackets containing relevant prior exams for the radiologist to review.
• Maintain proficiency in the use of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), RIS (Radiology Information System), and other associated systems.
• Verify that studies are appropriately and accurately stored using electronic systems.
• Demonstrate technical aptitude and familiarity with computer applications; willingness to learn software applications.
• Assure adequate inventory of supplies.
• Participate in in-service activities for hospital staff and/or the community.
• Assist in the orientation and training of new technologists.
• Contribute to the development and revision of departmental policies and procedures upon request.
• Review orders for the next day’s room assignment to ensure all orders and supporting documents are available prior to patient arrival.
• Maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduate of an American Medical Association-approved school of ultrasonography.
• Registered by the ARDMS in either abdominal or OB/GYN (both preferred).
• Minimum of one year of ultrasound experience required; three years preferred.
• Training and/or experience specific to ultrasound/radiology practices regarding neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Proven ability to interact effectively with patients, co-workers, practitioners, and visitors.
• Willingness to work in a team-oriented environment.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work independently.
• Familiarity with Meditech Health Information System is preferred.
• Technical aptitude and willingness to learn software applications used at AVH.

Schedule

All new hires are required to attend a mandatory three-day orientation at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster, NH. If Weeks Medical Center is not your designated home base, you will be eligible for travel reimbursement in accordance with our standard travel policy.
