About the Role

Phelps Health is a 2000-employee hospital and healthcare system serving the heart of small-town Missouri. The Ultrasound Technologist (Sonographer) provides patient services using ultrasound imaging equipment, producing exam records for interpretation by the radiologist. May assist in other Medical Imaging divisions as trained.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates schedule flexibility, punctuality, and availability while working well under pressure.
  • Communicates and discusses complex or involved information, sets priorities, organizes tasks, and manages time effectively.
  • Provides personal care and safe transfers, including proficiency with adaptive equipment such as hoyer lifts and sliding boards.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Handles confidential materials and complies with the corporate compliance plan.
  • Participates in hospital performance improvement initiatives as directed.
  • Keeps patients and significant others informed of exam status and responds to requests for assistance promptly.
  • Performs patient ultrasound services according to department policies, procedures, and regulatory guidance.
  • Interprets physician’s orders accurately, assists in maintaining patient and department records, and ensures patient safety.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an ultrasound technology program (current enrollment in a program allowed).
  • One year of experience as a registered sonographer preferred; multi-modality technologist experience is a plus.
  • Registered sonographer – ARDMS in OB or ABD, currently registered by SDMS, or RT(S) currently registered by the ARRT.
  • Allowances for registry-eligible individuals who will attempt registry within 30 days of hire and pass within 90 days.
  • Registered radiography technologists (ARRT) enrolled in an ultrasound training program may be considered, with registry attempts required within 30 days of eligibility and passing within 90 days.
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • Close mental and visual attention required for sustained periods.
  • Frequently works under stressful conditions due to customer demands and critical patient conditions.
  • Must be able to transport self throughout the department.
  • Physical tasks include standing, walking, sitting, carrying/lifting (up to 35 lbs.), turning, pushing, pulling, and stooping.

Working Conditions

  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases, disagreeable odors, anesthetics, disinfectants, and chemicals.
  • May be exposed to controlled radiation.
  • Subject to call on a regular or scheduled basis.
  • Scheduled for various shifts and days of the week as necessary to provide services.
