About the role

The Nebraska Department of Labor is seeking detail-oriented individuals to join our Unemployment Insurance (UI) Adjudicators team. In this role, you’ll help connect individuals to employment success by analyzing claims, processing appeals, and ensuring compliance with Unemployment Insurance program requirements in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze benefit claims to gather necessary information and write legal formal determinations of benefit eligibility.
  • Process appeals from claimants and employers, explain procedures, assist in completion of appeals, complete required documents, and perform data entry of transactions.
  • Testify on behalf of the Commissioner of Labor as needed in appeal hearings.
  • Investigate and establish overpayments of benefits to ensure unauthorized payments are not made and comply with legal requirements.
  • Answer verbal and written inquiries from claimants, employers, and other agencies to explain legal requirements and procedures related to the Unemployment Insurance program.
  • Interview claimants to determine continued eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits, identify barriers, verify work search activities, and refer to reemployment services through One Stop offices.
  • Retrieve, review, and update claimant and employer information using computer database inquiries and data entry skills.
  • Collect, validate, and assemble completed claims for imaging and archival storage.
  • File initial, additional, and extended unemployment insurance benefits by telephone as directed by supervisor.
  • Adhere to State, Department of Labor, and UI Division policies and procedures.
  • Assist with testing, wage investigations, and adjudicate various types of claims (e.g., CWC, UCX, UCFE, APT, Trade).
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Unemployment Insurance Benefits Program.

Requirements

  • Post high-school coursework/training in math, composition, and/or use of computer equipment, or experience in fact-finding/interviewing, customer service (including answering inquiries or explaining procedures), or call center experience.
  • Preferred: Experience adjudicating unemployment insurance claims or using Nebraska’s current benefit payment system (NEworks).
  • Proficient computer and typing skills.

Skills

  • Knowledge of: Nebraska Employment Security Law.
  • Skilled in: Interviewing clients, employers, or other parties to collect essential information; basic computer skills (word processing and data entry); organizing workload in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to: Meet timeliness and time-lapse requirements per federal guidelines; communicate effectively via telephone or email; make decisions within the scope of Nebraska Employment Security Law; maintain regular and reliable attendance.
