About the role
Responsible for assuring the patient is scheduled for the correct procedure at the appropriate time and with the appropriate resources. Responsible for pre-registration of the scheduled patient. Accurate documentation of the patients' medical insurance and required authorizations is required. It is the responsibility of this position to assure that referring office staff and patients receive the highest customer service available as this is often the patient's first impression.
Responsibilities
- Assure the patient is scheduled for the correct procedure at the appropriate time and with the appropriate resources.
- Perform pre-registration of the scheduled patient.
- Accurately document patients' medical insurance and required authorizations.
- Provide high-level customer service to referring office staff and patients.
- Perform all scheduling and pre-registration functions necessary to maintain efficient and smooth operations of the scheduling function.
- Coordinate the scheduling and ordering of procedures for designated departments based on established guidelines.
- Schedule services as requested by physician offices or patients, provide preparation instructions for exams, and screen for pertinent information prior to scheduling exam.
- Pre-register patients in computer system according to the hospital's registration guidelines.
- Ascertain insurance information to comply with managed care regulations or other insurance regulations.
- Perform a revenue cycle review and refer appropriate patients to Financial Care Consultants.
- Maintain records according to hospital and regulatory requirements.
- Plan and prioritize daily workload to meet needs of the department and continuity of workload.
- Maintain telephone/reception skills that are customer focused, positive, and friendly.
- Serve as a role model in demonstrating respect for the customer and the protection of their confidentiality and rights.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and employee information.
- Convey a positive attitude and support harmonious relationships.
- Communicate effectively with physician office and hospital departments.
- Collaborate with physician office staff to maintain effective working relationships and to provide education for new office staff members.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing department needs and work requirements.
- Abide by hospital personnel policies and support the Mission and Values of the Uniontown Hospital.
- Assume responsibility for personal development; identify areas in need of personal or professional development and set goals to meet those needs.
- Participate in cross-training functions to allow for maximum flexibility and use of personnel.

- Maintain an orderly and neat work area.
- Perform all duties/tasks as assigned by the Director/designee and prioritize other assignments to assure target timelines are met.
- Assist in the training and orientation of new staff members.
- Maintain department equipment and record/report equipment malfunctions, including initiating service work orders.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Two (2) years medical secretarial/medical clerical experience.
- One (1) year health insurance experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to attend to more than one aspect of a situation simultaneously.
- Efficiency in processing of verbal information, either in written or spoken form.
- Some independent thought, planning, or origination of options and solutions is necessary.
- Ability to apply principles of reasoning and problem solving to resolve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, turning, and reaching.
- Ability to lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds.
Working Environment
