About the role

Reading Partners is a leader in working to solve the literacy crisis by leveraging community volunteers in under-resourced schools. Our diverse and expansive volunteer base provides one-on-one tutoring to students twice weekly, helping children master the reading fundamentals they need to unlock their potential. This position is part of a dynamic partnership team ensuring success for our Newark geography during the fall. The Tutoring Coordinator Intern (TC) will work closely with the partnership leadership team to implement fall tutoring, program operations, and tutor support.

This is an in-person role for candidates residing in the Greater Newark or Metropolitan New York City area with access to reliable transportation. The position runs from September 21st, 2026, to December 4th, 2026.

Responsibilities

  • 70% - Lead Fall Tutoring at one of Newark fall sites
    • Conduct beginning and end-of-fall assessments
    • Lead daily tutoring sessions by taking attendance, scheduling students, managing daily operations, tutor coaching, and ensuring program quality
    • Provide in-person coaching and support for tutors using the Reading Partners Connects curriculum
    • Check-in regularly with a member of the national Reading Partners team
  • 20% - Community and Family Engagement
    • Facilitate tutor orientations as needed
    • Facilitate family engagement workshops as needed
  • 10% - Other Duties as Needed

  • Ability to prove eligibility to work legally in the U.S. and be at least 18 years of age
  • Must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Current NJ undergraduate student
    • Current NJ graduate student
    • Recent NJ college graduate (graduated less than one year prior to start of internship, May 2025-May 2026 graduates)
    • A current undergraduate student who is a permanent NJ resident

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs
  • Listen and verbally communicate to provide coaching to tutors and students
  • Work effectively in a noisy setting with frequent interruptions
  • Maintain focus and productivity despite environmental distractions

Pay

The compensation range for this position is $19.00 - $21.19 per hour.

Schedule

This is a part-time, non-exempt, and hourly position. Part-Time Tutoring Coordinator Interns work an average of 20 hours per week from September 21st, 2026, to December 4th, 2026.
