Trust Fellow in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (ST3+)

About the role

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual to join their well-integrated team. The post is suitable for those candidates who wish to take time out of their training program or who are already accredited and wish to gain further training and experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and cardiac intensive care.

Main duties of the job

• Based in Cardiothoracic anaesthesia (CTA) theatres and/or Cardiac Intensive Care unit (CICU).
• Cardiothoracic Theatres for Adult Cardiac & Thoracic Patients: Freeman hospital has 2 adult cardiac theatres and 2 adult thoracic theatres running on almost daily basis. The CTA department also provides urgent and emergency perioperative care for all heart, lung or heart-lung transplant patients, in addition, the service extends to cover MCS provision and aortic surgery covering the 24 hours.
• CICU for Adult Cardiac Patients: The CICU has twenty-one level three beds (six isolation cubicles) and seven level two beds in an adjoining area. Duties are based in these areas but extend to support deteriorating patients on the wards, support for cardiology emergencies and accompanying patients during transport to other centers.
• Auditing and Research: The appointee will be encouraged to undertake audit and research projects during the post.
• Education: The appointee will be encouraged to participate in teaching for medical students, nursing staff and less experienced trainees, and to undertake the preparation of topical reviews.

Person specification

• Education and Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent, must hold full GMC registration or be eligible to obtain full GMC registration within 3 months, must have or working towards FRCA, FFICM, EDAIC or similar.
• Clinical Skills and Knowledge: Cardiothoracic anaesthesia and/or cardiac ICU exposure/experience, good history and examination skills, experience in US guided lines insertion, ability to formulate a differential diagnosis, ability to order appropriate investigations, ability to manage common medical emergencies and ongoing management in critical care, knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
