About the role

The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) seeks motivated applicants for the position of Trooper II to fill vacancies across Wyoming. This position enforces Wyoming’s laws through primary contact with the public and has statewide jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

  • Aid in traffic law enforcement, crash investigations, citizen assistance, executive or dignitary protection, safety awareness activities/promotion, and public speaking.
  • Ensure excellent communication skills with the public, peers, chain of command, and internal and external stakeholders in all situations.
  • Anticipate and adapt to continuously changing situations and maintain self-control under stressful situations.
  • Administer first/medical aid.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possess an Advanced Peace Officer Certification or higher through the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) or equivalent from another state.
  • Have 3-5 years of work experience working with the public, including 1-2 years as a certified law enforcement officer in Wyoming or equivalent in another state, or as a Trooper with Wyoming Highway Patrol.
  • Complete the Wyoming Highway Patrol training academy and field training program.
  • Pass a series of tests, including a written, oral, physical, psychological, polygraph or equivalent examination, and drug test.

  • Basic research and understanding of the job duties of a Wyoming State Trooper.
  • Healthy physical fitness and nutrition habits.
  • Comprehend the Wyoming Highway Patrol testing process.

Pay

$2,000 Hiring Bonus available for new hires meeting specific criteria.

Schedule

Work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Shifts, holidays, and weekends are common.

Notes

  • FLSA: Non-exempt.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  • Visual acuity of, or be correctable, to 20/20 or better.
  • Bring a photo ID (driver's license).
  • Pass the Public Safety Test (PST) before attending testing in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
  • Complete a program of initial training at the Wyoming Highway Patrol Academy and pass a series of tests.
  • When offered a permanent, full-time position, applicants will be advised of their assigned duty station.
  • The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace.
  • E-Verify used to confirm eligibility to work in the United States.
  • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed for the hiring incentive.
  • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
